When to Choose Assisted Living Over Home Care

Assisted living is often the better choice when someone needs 24/7 supervision, has significant memory issues, or when home modifications would be too costly.

Signs It's Time for Assisted Living

Home care works well for many seniors, but assisted living may be the better choice when:

  • Safety concerns at home: Frequent falls, leaving the stove on, wandering (dementia)
  • 24/7 supervision needed: When care needs exceed what a single aide can provide
  • Social isolation: Living alone with limited social interaction
  • Caregiver burnout: Family caregivers are overwhelmed
  • Home not suitable: Stairs, narrow doorways, or other barriers that can't be modified

When Home Care Is Better

Home care is often preferable when the senior has strong preferences to stay home, has a supportive family network nearby, needs only part-time assistance, or has a medical condition requiring familiar surroundings (some dementia patients do better at home).

The Hybrid Approach

Many families use a combination: home care during the week with family coverage on weekends, or home care supplemented by adult day programs. This can be more cost-effective than full-time assisted living while providing more support than home care alone.
